How to Select Fabrics for Children’s Clothing

Children’s clothing is an important and exacting part of the garment production industry, and the fabrics needed for children’s clothing production have very different requirements compared to adult clothing. Here is an article that briefly explains how to choose fabrics for children’s clothing.

Basic requirements

As we all know, clothing accessories include fabrics, buttons, lining, zippers, elastic bands, lace, loopers, etc. The accessories needed for children’s clothing are also roughly the same categories.

Compared with adult fabric, children’s fabric is more comfortable in the hand and more strict in safety, moisture wicking, sweat absorption, etc.

Commonly used fabrics in children’s clothing

Cotton

It is a natural fabric, comfortable and warm. But it is easy to wrinkle with poor durability.

Advantages:

Strong moisture absorption capacity – cotton fiber is a porous material, the internal molecular arrangement is very irregular, and the molecules contain a large number of hydrophilic structures.

Warmth – cotton fiber is a poor conductor of heat, and its inner cavity is filled with non-flowing air.

Comfortable to wear – no static electricity, breathable, anti-sensitive, easy to clean

Disadvantages:

Easy to wrinkle-cotton fiber is less elastic.

Shrinkage – it has a strong water absorption that could make cotton fibers swell, resulting in shortening and deformation of cotton yarn.

Mildew – in a humid state, if encountered with bacteria or fungus, the fabric will mold. If contact with sunlight for a long time, the fiber will become hard and brittle; if it meets oxidizing agents, bleaching powder, and other dyes, it will also make the fiber strength decrease.

Single-sided plain fabric

Single-sided fabric refers to fabric whose dyeing is mainly on one side. Its bottom and surface look different. Because its surface is a low needle, the bottom is a high needle, the weave is strong and thinner than double-sided fabric. This fabric with a smooth surface is breathable, sweat-absorbing, and less elastic. Mostly used for T-shirts.

Knitted double-sided fabric

This kind of fabric has a soft texture, breathable absorption, excellent elasticity, and so on. Knitted clothing is comfortable to wear, and close-fitting, without a sense of constraint.

Coral fleece

The coral fleece has a delicate texture and soft feel with no pilling. Its color will not fade. Besides, it has excellent water absorption performance than cotton products. No irritation to the skin, no allergy. Commonly, the fabric is also becoming an alternative to cotton bathrobes.

Terry cloth

This fabric is thick and firm. It performs well in elasticity, moisture absorption, and heat retention. Mainly used as sportswear, lapel T-shirt, pajamas, children’s wear, and other fabrics

In the production and design of children’s clothing, we should not only consider the beauty of the clothing but also consider the safety of children when wearing this fabric, so it would not be wrong to pay more attention to the fabric. In addition to the above 5, there are more fabrics that can be used for children’s clothing, as you will see in the subsequent articles.
